Kinect + 3D TV = Virtual Reality
Posted on
This video demonstrates the powerful combination of a Microsoft Kinect and a 3D TV. The result is a system that responds to the presence of a user to create the illusion of a virtual reality joined with true reality at the plane of the screen. This software was developed by Robert Kooima using OpenNI, and is demonstrated running on an Ubuntu Linux system. The visualization uses the Electro VR application scripting system. 3D graphics are rendered using OpenGL on an NVIDIA GTX 470

Aren’t Seeing Machines already achieving this in part with their faceAPI?
We’ve already are seen them pair up with Toshiba with the new Toshiba Qosimo F750, producing 3D images via eye-tracking and the webcam built into the laptop, i.e. no need for Kinect type cameras. But certainly food for thought.

January 4th, 2012 - 18:00
it looks 3D even without glasses!
January 4th, 2012 - 18:18
@coasterpro Not to mention that each eyewear needs both left or right lenses (unless the lenses are individually controlled, at which point you don’t need such).
But you can do 2x 3D with a true 240hz TV, except the picture would be very dark, at 1/4 normal.

This is, obviously, how games will look in the future, CAN’T WAIT!
January 4th, 2012 - 19:44
@xenoepist That simply wouldn’t work. You can program the shutter glasses to shutter both eyes simultaneously, and thus project separate images to two different people. But you cannot do this and provide a stereoscopic effect at the same time. The effect would be wholly 2D, and there would still only be a total of two images rendered per frame. You could still get away with head tracking however, and that would still provide a basic 3D effect. Perhaps this is what you meant.
