Darwin Day 2008 – Evolved virtual creature compilation video

Posted on

I hadn't done a real creature compilation video in months, and there were enough new creatures produced since the last such video to make another. This one has been churned out to celebrate Darwin Day, though I'm a few days early. Better that than late. The music is clearly a little over the top, but what the hell. ;P I hope you enjoy it, and Happy Darwin Day (Feb 12th) to everyone! Thanks go to volunteers out there who have helped me and are continuing to help me with this project by donating many months of processing time. The project web page is: www.stellaralchemy.com

  1. 8 people believe in creationism….

  2. Respect. Totally incredible work, these things really inspire. GOOD LUCK.

  3. @SnowWalkerPrime Thanks, man! They still surprise me sometimes. :)

  4. @perrid13 Thanks a lot!
This version has nothing at all like predation or food, but I might try some kind of one-on-one combat activity at some point :)

  5. Amazing stuff. Just boggles the mind the creatures you create.

  6. So how far does the competition go? Do the creatures need food and have to eat each other? And congrats on doing all of this, it looks really cool.

  7. @prime342 Thanks a lot :)

  8. @SirRecluse Thanks, I’ll try to check that out sometime :)

  9. @thefrozenmercury Sadly, you could be right, lol

  10. this is fucking awesome!!!!!

  11. What if this program was left on for Millions of years? —> Read more on my

  12. 8 people only see moving shapes and not the logical principles behind them.

  13. @Doomside Thanks a lot! :)

  14. So friggin cool.

  15. @jetsam50000 The Cambian seas were full of wierd and wonderful animal designs, most left no legacy. The most basic animals can’t swim, even today, and so exist in a 2D plane, confined to the ocean floor.

  16. @MarshmallowRadiation I agree. It should get even more interesting as more and more computing power becomes available :)

  17. I’ve seen a lot of these, and my favorite by far are the frogs and the end-over worms. I can’t wait until computers can handle a whole bunch more data, allowing for more elegant, efficient creatures.

  18. @kjlg74 Ok thanks!

  19. @houkou1 I’m not sure what the minimum requirements would be, but I’d wager any computer not more than 6 or 7 years old should be able to handle it.

  20. @kjlg74 How good of a computer do you need to run it?

  21. @xilliah Yes, that would be a lot of fun!

  22. I’d love to enter a world where all creatures were evolved digitally, so I’ve never seen them before!

  23. @dan70411 There’s a link in the video description. It takes you to the website for the project. There’s a download section there.

  24. where can i get this evolution program ? iv been looking all over for it !

  25. Your making a big assumption, the environment in this world is a 2-d plane. given a billion years I wouldn’t except something all that amazing. After all, they do nothing but walk. Also even if there were no rules I would doubt that anything would be accomplished. Like I said this simulation is far to simple.
